How to Improve GPS Accuracy on Android

If Android location is inaccurate, the best fixes are usually mundane: give the phone a clearer view of the sky, grant precise location when the app genuinely needs it, keep relevant system services enabled, and separate stale points from genuinely bad fixes. “GPS booster” apps cannot rewrite the laws of radio propagation.

Start by testing outdoors

Take the phone outside to an open area away from tall buildings and leave it stationary for several minutes. Satellite geometry and signal quality are usually much better there than indoors. If accuracy improves substantially, the hardware is probably functioning and the normal environment is the dominant problem.

Check precise versus approximate permission

Modern Android lets the user grant an app approximate location. If you deliberately chose approximate access, a route-recording app cannot manufacture precise coordinates afterward. Open the app's permission settings and check whether precise location is enabled when detailed tracking is actually your intended use.

Do not grant more access merely because a generic tutorial tells you to. The permission should match the feature you want.

Make sure the point is actually current

A stale location can look like an accuracy problem. Check the timestamp before deciding that the marker is “wrong.” If the last point is from before you entered a building or started travelling, troubleshoot background updates or connectivity rather than satellite precision.

Keep Android and location services current

Install normal operating-system and Google system updates available for the handset. Restart the phone if positioning has become persistently abnormal. Android's location stack can use more than satellites alone, so Wi-Fi scanning, cellular information and platform services can all contribute depending on your settings.

A restart is especially useful after a device has been running for a long time or after a major update. It is not a guaranteed “GPS calibration,” but it provides a clean baseline for testing.

Compass calibration is not the same as GPS accuracy

A miscalibrated compass can make the direction arrow point the wrong way while the latitude and longitude remain correct. Moving the phone in a figure-eight pattern may help some magnetometer issues, but it should not be advertised as a cure for every GPS position error.

Distinguish heading, position and map matching. They are related in navigation apps but they are not one sensor measurement.

Compare more than one reputable app

If one tracker is wrong while a maps application and another GNSS-aware app agree, the issue may be the tracker's permissions, caching or background behavior. If several independent apps remain badly wrong outdoors, hardware, system configuration or unusual radio conditions become more plausible.

Use the same place and time when comparing. Different apps sampled minutes apart may simply have experienced different conditions.

For continuous tracking, fix background reliability too

Accuracy means little if the app stops collecting points when the screen turns off. Confirm precise location first, then test a locked-screen journey and review Android battery restrictions if records disappear. Avoid impossible accuracy promises

No responsible phone tracker can guarantee the same metre-level precision on every device, in every building and at every moment. Use the reported accuracy estimate, several consecutive points and environmental context. A real test on your own handset is more informative than a fixed number attached to a model name.
