Xiaomi phones can be particularly aggressive about conserving battery. HyperOS and earlier MIUI releases include power-management controls that may affect apps expected to run for long periods in the background.
Before changing Xiaomi-specific settings, verify that Android has granted the tracker the location access it needs. Precise location and background access are separate concepts on modern Android.
If the app only has approximate permission, the phone is following your privacy choice; power settings cannot turn approximate data into precise route tracking.
